Delhi simply has too many things to see but there are some places that you must visit, if nothing else then to get at least a very, very general feel for the city’s immense historic, cultural and religious heritage.
- The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is one of, if not the most visited and photographed Delhi’s sight. This red sandstone fort was built by the Mughal dynasty (also responsible for the Taj Mahal) and it became the palace from which they would rule in the future. The works were completed in 1648, and the years that have passed have left their mark on the buildings. Still, the complex remains a sight of wonder and the beautiful gardens are lush and green even in midwinter.
- Humayun’s Tomb is located in south Delhi, near Hazrat Nizamuddin station and is one of Delhi’s most prominent places of interest. It is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and is a sight to behold at any time of the day. The main attraction is the tomb of Humayun, a Mughal emperor. This 16th century structure has been described as a building that later influenced and was a kind of prototype for the more famous Taj Mahal.
- Qutub complex in Mehrauli, houses structures dating from the 13th century and is the third in the Big Three of Delhi’s tourist sights. The unbelievable gardens make this place a popular pale for a relaxing walk or rest. Most nights, after sunset, light-and-sound shows take place.
Delhi is also the place of one of the modern architectural marvels, the world-famous Lotus Temple which has been the most visited tourist attraction in the world since it was built in the 1980-ies (beating Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal). Whether you are a person who has any reverence for the wonders of architecture is not relevant, the sheer monumental size and breathtaking form of the temple will certainly leave you speechless.
You can shop around malls and boutiques anywhere in the world, but there is only one Chandni Chowk. Chandni Chowk is a market that runs through the middle of the Old Delhi, from the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort to Fatehpu
